Artifacts
High-Level Overview: An exploration-driven progression system tracking the discovery of rare, uniquely hidden world relics. Collected artifacts fill a physical display archive inside Mortimer's Museum, the game's main vehicle for deeper lore, and certain finds add high-value hats to Hootsworth's Hat Store.
The Collection and Deposit Loop
Artifacts are the highest tier of hidden object in a level, rewarding thorough spatial exploration and creative routing.
1. Finding one in the world
Discovery: Artifacts sit in obscured, unmarked spots such as hidden cave alcoves or underwater crannies.
Pickup: Collecting an artifact plays a distinct audio cue and a special collection animation.
2. The Museum
- When the player enters Mortimer's Museum in the central Hub World after collecting an artifact, the camera pans to each new artifact in turn as it slowly pops into its cabinet.
Implementation Breakdown
Once turned in, artifacts stop being abstract checklist data and become physical 3D objects inside the museum architecture.
1. Filling the cabinets
The museum interior has dedicated, empty display cabinets and pedestals. Depositing an artifact toggles its visibility flag, instantly rendering the specific 3D model inside its cabinet.
2. Reading window
Players can approach any occupied display cabinet and press the interact button to pull up a lore overlay. The screen blurs behind a clean text frame showing a close-up 2D render of the object, its official archaeological title, and an exclusive lore description written from Mortimer's scholarly perspective, covering the ancient history or humorous mystery behind the item.
Hootsworth Retail Integration and Unlocks
To tie narrative world-building to a tangible gameplay reward, the artifact tracking index feeds directly into Hootsworth's Hat Store and decides which hats are available to purchase.
1. Milestones by count
The global progression manager tracks the total number of artifacts returned to the museum. Crossing set thresholds updates the shop's stock, making unique high-tier hats permanently appear on the pedestals of Hootsworth's flagship store.
2. Paired items
Certain highly significant artifacts and thematic pop-culture easter eggs are linked to an individual companion piece of headwear. When one of these artifacts is registered in Mortimer's display, its paired hat is added to the hats Hootsworth has available to purchase.
