Mini Games
High-Level Concept: Optional, fast-paced side challenges placed across the main levels via themed carnival stands run by Minigame Mills. They are gated by level-specific hats, and offer low-stress, highly replayable diversions from the core platforming.
Framework
To keep optional side content evenly distributed, the game world follows an explicit layout for minigame availability.
Allocation: Every main exploration level features exactly 3 individual Carnival Stands.
Thematic Integration: Stands are physical props built directly into the local level layout, using playful aesthetics and subtle audio cues to naturally attract attention from a distance.
Access: Minigame Mills positions himself at each stand to handle player entry and check progression conditions.
Structural Design Pillars
Every minigame must fit a strict set of boundaries to stay balanced and remain accessible to younger players.
| Design Pillar | Technical Requirement | Operational Objective |
|---|---|---|
| Time Window | 30 seconds to 2 minutes. | Keeps challenges bite-sized, maintaining a snappy gameplay loop that avoids exploration fatigue. |
| Visual-First Literacy | No text needed to learn the rules. | Clear spatial arrangements, color-coded goal targets, and obvious movement loops communicate objectives instantly without text parsing. |
| Non-Punitive Gating | No penalty for failure. | Removes player stress. Failing a challenge loops straight into an enthusiastic prompt from Mills encouraging the player to try again. |
| Equipment Gating | Mandatory hat state requirement checks. | Interconnects game systems. The stand remains locked until the player purchases the corresponding world-specific Mini-Game Hat from Hootsworth's local stall. |
Implementation Breakdown
Minigame progression feeds back into the hub world, encouraging replayability and yielding tiered completion milestones.
0. Golden Tickets: the reward currency
Mini-games are the sole source of Golden Tickets (Systems - Collectables). Mills issues them; nothing else in the game does.
Issuing rules:
- A ticket is awarded for first-time completion of a stand. Replaying pays nothing; the currency measures coverage, not grinding.
- Tickets are spent at NPC - Hootsworth's Flagship Store on exclusive headwear, and at Mills' own hub-world Travelling Mart.
- Because Mills is the only issuer, the total ticket count in the game is fixed and knowable: 3 stands × every main level. That makes Golden Tickets a completion metric as much as a currency, and their prices should be set against that fixed supply.
Golden Tickets must not be purchasable with Sand Dollars, and must not buy anything Sand Dollars can buy. The moment the two economies touch, the mini-games stop being the reason to earn tickets.
1. Stand-Level Tracking
On completing a minigame for the first time, an animated milestone stamp or star is rendered directly onto the physical framework of the Carnival Stand, giving the player instant visual confirmation of completion.
2. Regional Mastery Loop
Clearing all 3 level minigames within a single world sector triggers two completion events:
Cosmetic Drop: A rare-tier, hub-world-specific cosmetic is unlocked and placed at the Minigame Travelling Mart in the Hub World.
Unique Narrative Reaction: Minigame Mills unlocks a custom, high-enthusiasm celebration dialogue stream and a unique character animation set to mark the player's completion.
