The Engine Enemy Lore

With the heavy doors to the volcano forced open and no way to warp back across the vast desert to the hub world, Koopa and Kiko must transition directly into the mechanical, magma-filled core of The Engine. Slithering inside just ahead of them is a sinister, hooded figure known as the Bunyip, a bizarre, arrogant amalgamation of a crocodile and a dog. The Bunyip used the resort's evaporation crisis as a distraction to sneak inside, using the power of the Trilobite Gem, another artifact gifted to him by the evil Japanese Spider Crab, to convert the ancient geothermal facility into his personal lair.

As the heroes explore the sweltering, metallic corridors, they discover the Bunyip has been hastily practicing lava magic to forge a crude army of volcanic golems. Mockingly, the alchemist has modelled these fiery rock grunts after the heroes themselves, creating twisted stone monsters with Koopa’s distinct head shape and Kiko’s agile wings cast in the same blistering rock as Mortimer's exploding artifact.

Alongside these lava clones, Koopa and Kiko are slowly introduced to a highly unsettling environmental hazard known as "The Anemone." This mysterious, parasitic pink gunk is found oozing and spreading through the metal grates and ancient machinery of the evil lair, hinting at a much larger corruption at play.

At the absolute bottom of the volcanic forge, Koopa and Kiko finally corner the boastful Bunyip. However, the resulting boss encounter is comedically trivial. After taking only a couple of hits, the overconfident sorcerer clumsily trips backward and tumbles straight into the bubbling magma below.

The heroes take a moment to celebrate their incredibly easy victory, assuming the job is done. Their cheers are cut short when the entire volcano begins to violently shake. The magma pool bubbles fiercely, and with an echoing roar, the colossal Trilobite beast slowly emerges from the lava alongside variations of the golems, initiating the true final battle of the expedition.

Upon defeating the Trilobite and securing the second gemstone, the Amber Fossil, the heroes finally return home. However, slotting two powerful gems into the Elder Turtle Statue at the exact same time overloads the ancient network. The resulting energy surge triggers a massive earthquake, shattering the pool and opening a massive sinkhole down to The Sanctum.
