Mortimer Mole

NPC

Core Role: Softly spoken museum curator who runs the game's artifact and lore system, treating every weird relic gathered from the worlds as a monumental find.

Design & Profile

Appearance

  • Short and round, with soft earth-toned fur that always looks a little dusty from digging.
  • Wears a tiny, neat curator waistcoat; usually holding a clipboard, a research notebook, or a monocle.
  • Hunched posture that straightens the moment an artifact comes near.

Personality

  • Calm, curious, gently enthusiastic. Academic but approachable.
  • Easily distracted by new discoveries; mutters notes to himself and loses track of sentences.
  • Treats all history with respect, even when the object being catalogued is silly or modern.

Gameplay & Narrative Function

  • Artifact Hub: The NPC for turning in, tracking, and displaying hidden level relics.
  • Progression Tracker: Opens new museum exhibits as missing artifacts come in.
  • World Builder: Hands out cryptic lore snippets, world history, and exploration hints about missing relics.
  • Completion Metric: A soft, narrative completion tracker rather than a rigid checklist.
Signature Line

"The museum is never truly finished, my friends... only temporarily organized."

Hub Home: Mortimer's Museum

  • Exterior: A sturdy stone-and-wood building set into a rocky hillside, partly reached through a shallow underground tunnel system. Small pedestals outside show off recent finds.
  • Interior: A warm, softly lit archive crammed with dusty scrolls, display cabinets, magnifying tools, and a cluttered research desk. High-value exhibits sit behind protective security mechanisms.

Relationships

  • NPC - Hootsworth: Polite, slightly bemused friendship. Appreciates the owl's craftsmanship but struggles to classify modern clothing in an ancient archive.
  • NPC - Sergeant Sky: Fascinated by the strict traditional structure of the Elder Trials.
  • NPC - Blob Makin: A little wary of the grumpy king. Finds the "Blobfish Empire" historically fascinating and a nightmare to catalogue.
  • The Elder Turtle: Deeply respects his authority and draws inspiration from his guidance.
  • Character - Koopa: Teaches him island history; appreciates the young turtle's caution and curiosity.
  • Character - Kiko: Exasperated by the bird's wrecking-ball nature, but secretly enjoys the discoveries the chaos unearths.
