King Kragg
Core Role: The Sandy Shores area boss and the campaign's first real antagonist. A massive armoured crab commanding the crab fleet, who kidnaps a baby turtle and flees deeper into the cave system across three levels before being cornered at the summit of the Cavern Mountain.
๐ Narrative Function
Kragg is the throughline that turns three separate Sandy Shores levels into one chase:
| Level | Kragg's role |
|---|---|
| Area 1 Level 1 - Sandy Shores - Sunwash Beach | Unseen. Described secondhand by a rescued baby turtle: "a big scary one that was telling the other crabs what to do." His ship pulls out of port in the closing cutscene. |
| Area 1 Level 2 - Sandy Shores - Cave Networks | Pursued. His anchored pirate ship is the level. Cannon fire damages the hull; he roars and breaks the ship free to retreat. |
| Area 1 Level 3 - Cavernous Climb | Fought. The summit arena, then the mechanical suit breakdown. |
The player hears about Kragg, then sees his ship, then damages his ship, then fights him. Three levels of escalation before the first hit lands, and the reveal order is what carries the area.
๐ฎ Combat Design
Phase structure
The fight is a sequence of phases, each with its own behaviour set and its own answer. Phases advance as the fight is won rather than on a clock; the player should feel that they caused the escalation.
The attack set
| Beat | Function |
|---|---|
| Walk / Idle | Arena movement and neutral. The reading space between attacks. |
| Attacks | The core threat pool, escalating per phase. |
| Shell stance | An armoured guard he comes out of. Has to be broken or waited out: the fight's recurring gate. |
| Dizzy | The punish window. Built on the read-and-punish grammar the area has already taught, so the player arrives fluent in it. |
| Exhaustion | A second, deeper vulnerability. The between-phase beat, and the moment the fight visibly turns. |
| Death | The kill. |
Summoning
Kragg calls in crab reinforcements: a few at a time, capped, on a cooldown. This is characterisation before it is a mechanic: he commands rather than fights, and being forced to fight personally is the arc of the encounter.
The mechanical suit
The suit is the armour, the phases strip it, and the breakdown is the resolution. It should read as the source of his invulnerability windows (attacking the suit is what opens him up) so that dismantling it is the fight rather than a cutscene played over the top of one.
